Mitford, of the Head Office Staff of the Bank of New Zealand, was yesterday the recipient of a presentation by his fellow officers upon tho occasion of his departure on extended leave prior to beiug placed on superannuation. Mr. Mitford, who .has been iu the service of the bank since 1871, loaves shortly to tako up his residence in. Auckland. Dr. It. H. Makgill, district health offi-' cer at Auckland, who is travelling to England by the Zealaiidic, has, according to private advice by cable, reached Teneriffe, and is welj. Dr. Makgill has been detailed by the War Office for special work in the chemistry department, and will join his uncle, Dr. John S. Haldane, F.R.S. Cable advice has been received by Mrs. .Horace Wimsett, of Island Bay, •that her son, Private Horace Wimsett, of the Ist Expeditionary l'orce (Otago Battalion), who was seriously wounded at the Dardanelles, is progressing favourably. A letter to hand recently stated that Private Wimsett was shot in the jaw during severe trench fighting, his two comrades to right and left being killed instantaneously. Private Wimsett was a member of the staff of the Post autl Telegraph Office at Hokitika at the time he enlisted for service. Mr. Alan Campbell, only son of Col. G. F, 0. Campbell, Coast Defence Commander,, has received- his commission in the Highland Light Infantry, after four months' training iu the Royal, Military College, Sandhurst. Lieut. Campbell, who is only 18 years of age, >vas educated at.Wanganui College, and while still there received the nomination of His Excellency the v Governor for admission to Sandhurst. He left New Zealand on the outbreak of the war, and has now passed out of Sandhurst into his regiment, Last night's Gazette formally announces- the promotion of Colonel Richard Hutton Davies, C.8., New Zealand Staff Corps, to be Major-General. The death occurred at the AVellingtou Hospital yesterday afternoon of Trooper Edwin Matthew Phillips, of the Auckland Mounted Rifles. His death was duo to an attack of pneumonia. • Inspector liendrey is at present on a short holiday, and he will resume duty on Monday or Tuesday nest. Police-Sergeant Taylor, of Manners Street Police Station, is at present an inmate of the Wellington Hospital suffering from a recurrence of an old illness. He is reported to be progressing as well as can be expected. Priavte Hugh Stafford, of Nelson, who was removed to the Wellington Hospital' from the Trentham Camp some days ago, died at the institution last night from an attack of pneumonia following on measles. ' Mr. W. H. Powell,-, dental'surgeon, youngest son of the late Edward Powell, Marlborough, has enlisted as a private in the Ambulance Division, and is now in' Trenthaiu Camp. Sir. Powell is a cousin to General Sir R. BadenPowell, and to General Sir Francis Thomas, K.C\B. (Chatham). Mr. Powell is an old volunteer and his many fviouds all over New Zealand will wish him the best of luck as' a soldier. ' Lioutenant George Cohen, third son of Alderman Louis C-ohen,\ of Livetpool, an ex-Lord Mayor of' that city, has been killed in action in France. Hie late officer was a cousin of Mrs. Arthur M: Myers, M.P., and Mrs. Charles Nathan, of Auckland. Major Stanley Cohen. • a brother of Lieutenant George Cohen, has been wounded at the front. Another brother, Captain J. B.' Cohen, is on active service, ' Lieutenant J. S. Haldane, whose gallant death in action was described in- a cablegram published on Tuesday, was the only &on of Dr. John Scott Haldane, F.R.S., of Oxford, who was recently engaged in investigating matters in relation to the use of poisonous gases by the Germans. He was also a nephew' of Viscount Haldane He was an officer of the Black Watch, and commanded a brigade of bonib and grenade throwers. Lieutenant Haldane, who was 22 years old, had a brilliant career at Oxford. He was a cousin of Dr. E. H. Makgill, district health officer at Auckland.'
Dr. Spencer Beard, who is'acting as locum tenens for Dr. M'Lean, while the latter is absent with the Expeditionary Force, has arrived here from Masterton, and has taken up his residence at 14 Boulcott Street. -
