Dixon, to-day. • He was quite justified iii congratulat,;ing the district upon laving such 'a lino exhibition at Hawera. The display is certainly a very fine one, the dairy classes being particularly strong, and , clearly demonstrating the loading place cheese and butter-are taking among our industries. Butter-fat. is...Taranaki's life, and the important part it haa : ; takeu , ill the development of the province was clearly reflected in; the great piles of cheese and butter that came • before the Dairy Commissioner and staff for the verdict factory managers and suppliers are so proud of obtaining. 'Factories in both the North, and South v Islands were represented., but it is singular that* though-a fair number 'of Taranaki factories'competed, there were a good many missing. The judges'as well ■' as others competont to estimate its ex- '■ cellence expressed the opinion, that the ■' display of cheese and butter is a fine one, if'not finer than any seen, in tlie ' North Island. .The butter, was exceedingly ."good right through, being practically , perfect in every respect, ■ except in the . flavour. Levin won first honours in. three sections, Awahuri, which has competed with considerable success at all shows . this winter, filling the position of runner up. .In eafch case in the section for Taranaki factories only the Omata Dairy Factory (0. such a large scale as at Palmerston, it was nevertheless comprehensive, being wide in 1 its scope and embraced every phase of the agricultural world.
There was a good display of fruit, though not nearly so large as it should be. There are some excellent farms and orchards in Taranaki, and if growers combined to make the display an effective one they could lyake a very creditable exhibition. Mr. Duncan, of Nelson, had a very goj»d showing of apples, his display of Jonathans, iuunro's favourite, and Delicious having commanded great attention. ' in the scliool gardens competition Tokarai were first with 178 points out of a maximum of 200, and Eraser Hoad second witn 109 points. U'arm and Garden produce wero well represented, t!he most successful prizewinners being (i. Bryant (HaweraJ, H. Briscoe (Mat-apu), A. Passy (Palmerston North), W. J. Arundel (l'atea), Oglo Bros., and G, Y. Tate OYaitara), uud G. H. Boyles. Honey, though numerically confined to thirty-nine exhibits, the Government expert said that the quality was excellent and equalled any he had yet tested in New Zealand. C. F. Rainie, of Ina'ha, H. Warcup, Hawera, and G. Taylor, Hawera, were the first prize-winners/ whilst A. Mitchell, Hawera, H. 0. Squire, Hawera, and H. R. Penny, Okaiawa, also gained awards. The best and most attractive display ol Apiary products was in the opinion of the judge that put forward by C. F. Rainie. The exhibition is on the whole -one of great- merit, there being 13G3 entries as against 1351 last year.
