EXPORT OF POTATOES ' , SMALL SETTLERS' COMPLAINT. A complaint against the embargo placed by the Government on the export of potatoes was made to the Prime Minister yesterday by Mr. J. Anstey, member i'or Waitaki, and Mr. Talbot, member for Ternuka. They pointed out to Mr. Massey that the embargo hit the small settlers very hard bccauso the effect of it had been that the merchants bad stopped buying- They urged that before such a drastic stea as tile prohibition of export were taken the Government should have a census taken of the quantity of potatoes iii the country at the same time as the cereal census was taken. The Prime Minister replied that the Government had not actually .stopped the export of potatoes, but had taken power to prohibit export at any time if such seeined fit. In the meantimo , all exports had to be made with the consent of the Minister of Customs. He stated also that the statistics as to tho quantity of potatoes on hand in tho country would be collected at tho same time as tho cereal returns now boing collected.. 1
