THE EVACUATION OF LEMBERG
REJOICINGS IN VIENNA THE AGED EMPEKOR MAKES A SPEECH REPORTS OF THE RECENT FIGHTING. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Rec. June 26, 0.30 a.m.) London, Juno 25. Tho "Morning Post's" Petrograd correspondent states that the Germans again employed tho phalanx formation in the fighting ill tlio direction of llawarusska '(north-west of Lemberg). The troops comprise picked regimonts from the French front. They were temporarily dissolved after the forcing of the passage of the San, owing to the difficulty of supplying the enormous number, in a restricted area, over long lines of communications. Ihey recovered effectiveness because the stubborn Russian resistance delayed tho speed of the advance. Though the formation continues to be effective, it is rapidly losing speed and compactness, and is becoming impracticable as communications become more and more difficult. , The German Josses at the Grodek Lakes (west of Lemberg) were appalling. Officers taken prisoner declare that they lost half their effectives before"the Russians retired to Lemberg. It is estimated that tho Germans lost half a million men in a vam endeavour to force a decisive battle. Tho Russians retain perfect freedom in manoeuvring. (Rec. June 25, 11.20 p.m.) Vienna, June 25. The Emperor, in a speech from the balcony at a great demonstration in tho Schoenburg to celebrate the fall of Lemberg, said he was convinced that the people would retain the same sentiments until, with God's will, a victorious and honourable peace gave the peoplo a lasting guarantee of welfare. RUSSIAN REARGUARDS FIGHTING HARD. (Reo. June 25, 11.20 p.m.) Vienna, June 25. Official.—"The fighting with strong Russian rearguards continues east and north-west of Lemberg. / , "Our troops have occupied Ostrowiec (in Southern Poland). BENZINE AND PETROLEUM REFINERIES BURNED. Amsterdam, June 24. German papers state that the western quarter of Lemberg was burned by tha Russians, who ignited the benzine and petroleum refineries before leaving. A German communique states that General von Lissingen has crossed the Dniester bet»ten Halicz and Zuravno, and is engaged in a violent battle. THE TSAR AT THE FRONT. Petrograd, June 24.
