Coadjutor-Archbishop O'Shea, of Wellington, left oil a holiday visit to San Francisco by the Marama on Thursday evening. Tho vestry of St. .John's, Invercargill, says a Press Association message t'rom Dunedin, has accepted the nomination of the Von. Archdeacon Richards, .Vicar of Lawrence, lor tho vacant charge, in succession to Archdeacon Packe, removed to Gisborne. Archdeacon Richards, who is on furlough in England, is being; communicated with regarding tho appointment. Tho condition of the Rev. F. Askew, Vicar of St. Mark's, who underwent an operation on Tuesday, was much improved yesterday. Major J. Roche, of Wellington, who has been a member of the Samoan Expeditionary Force since August of last year, and who recently suffered an attack of typhoid fever, returned to Wellington oii Tuesday last. He is now on twenty-eight days' leave, after which ho will report to the Defence authorities for dutyPrivate advices from London stato that Lieutenant Frank F. lleid, son of Mr. L. G. lieid, S.M., Wairorapa district, has received a commission in the Royal Field Artillery, and is now camped with the 2oth Division at Aldershot. Mr. J. S. Day, of the staff of Anderson's, Ltd.. of Christchurch, has been appointed to succeed Mr,. J. D. Avery (retired) as Town Clerk of Eastbourne and officer in charge of the borough's ferry steamers. Mr. Day was selected from forty-two applicants from all parts of Now Zealand. Prior to going to Christchurch, Mr. Day was, up till two years ago, in the employ of E. W. Mills and Co., of this city. He was also on the old Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company's clerical staff, and on tho staff of Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Wellington. ■ Mr. Avery will continue to carry out the duties of the office until Mr. Day takes charge next month. Mr. Charles A. Copeland, who has held a responsible position 011 the staff of Messrs. John Dutliio and Co., Ltd., for the past thirty-two years, and' who is about to enter into business on his own account at Douglas, in the Stratford district, was the recipient of two presentations on Thursday. Mr. R. 31. Jack, assistant manager for Messrs. fluthie and Co., in handing Mr. Copeland a valuable collection of cutlery, referred to the very cordial relations which had existed between that gentlemail and his fellow employees, and assured him of their best wishes for his future. Mr. Copeland, in replying, said that he appreciated very highly the Bentiment which prompted the gift. To have had the respect and trust of both the principals and the employees was something to be proud of. Mr. Copeland was also presented by the Hon. J. Duthie, M.L.C., 011 behalf of the firm, with a cheque for a substantial amount. Referring to this, Mr. Copeland said that Mr. Duthie's liberality to his employees in the matter of remuneration and the cordiality of spirit existing between them and him were well known. Mr. Copeland leaves for Taranaki today. An old resident of Masterton, Mr. Jacob Treader, died at Pahiatua, aged 80 years. Private Francis Garrett Barry, who is reported in yesterday's cablegrams as wounded at the Dardanelles, is the fifth son of the late Garrett Barry,_ of Blenheim. Private Barry, who, enlistment in the.4th Reinforcements, was employed on the staff of Mr. _J. Denning, grocer, was well-known in sporting and hockey circles. A private cable message has been received in Wellington from Major W. J. fcfardham, V.0., now in a hospital at Alexandria, stating that his wounds arc not of a serious nature, and that he is progressing favourably towards recovery. Mr. William C. Allen, of San Jose, president of the Northern Californmu Peace Society, and Mr. William B. Harvey, superintendent of Westown School, a large secondary educational establishment near Philadelphia, who have just completed an extensive tour i of Australia and New Zealand, were through passengers to San Francisco by the Marama on Thursday. Commissioner Hodder, of the Salvation Army, leaves this morning for Hastings, where he will conduct the anniversary meetings of the local corps.
