NAPIER PARK MEETING GLENMORE WINS BIG STEEPLES. (By Telegraph—biiuciol Correaoondent.) Napier, June 25. The Napier Park Racing Club's Winter Meeting opened to-dav. There was a goud attendance and tlio weather was line till after tile fourth race. Alter this a heavy tog descended and the horses woro completely hidden from view most of tlio ivay round. A total of ,£15,189 was put through the machine, against ,£15,001 on the first day <ji tne Winter Meeting last J'cat, Makara, who stripped well, was making his Kr.-st appearand) in a jumping race, but the public passed him over, and Ituatangata and Scrutineer carried most support. Epworth, Brunswick, and Makara were prominent for six furlongs, when Scrutineer and Ruatangata moved up. The Porirua horse, jumping well, took charge down the back, but RuataJigata'a fencing was faulty, and he lost his position. Rounding the bend Forelight joined Scrutineer, and Hurakia, who had come from a long way back, also put in a claim. Tho two jumped tho last fence together, and tho top-weight won nicely from there, l'orelight just beat Scrutineer, Ruatangata being the next to finish. The Hack Steeples, two miles, proved too much for most of the runners. Over the first circuit Kirkby and Grey Kenown led Dogger Bank and Memo Lad. The last-named and Master llalachi joined Kirkby at the half-mile, and the firstnamed appeared to have the race well in hand when he toppled over and Kirkby went with him. This left Master Malachi well ahead, and he won pulling up from Dogger Bank, with Grey Renown a long way back. Fond .Memory, Ruffiana, and Country Boy were pulled up, and Pelican fell at the stand double ithe first time. Several of the runners in tho big handicap were well supported, Hyettus and Heather Mixture disputing first choice. At tho start Ardent was quickest to begin,' and led from Suratura. Down the back Hyettus took charge, and he was in front at the distance when his big weight told its tale. Black Heart, who had been prominent across the bottom, then took charge, but over the last pinch His Eminence came with a rattle and won by a length. Diavolo and Achilledes, who were badly plated in the first part of the race, were the next to linish. Ardent, stopped badly over the last furlong,' and so did several of the others. Cumpeador was tailed off tho whole way, and seemed unable to act in the goiug, as was the case on the metropolitan course. Most of the runners in the big steeplechase came to grief at different stages of the journey. Leapuki was withdrawn on the course, and Sandy Paul was n'.ade favourite. He fell with Sportsman at the brush alter going a mile, and Glenmore and Naupata were left with a big lead. Tho' last-named came down with six furlongs to go, but was afterwards remounted, anil got third money. Glenmore had a big lead on Bollin with a mile to go, but the last-mentioned i. ade up a lot of giound between the fences, and at the finish he was only a neck away. Prince Eddie fell over Naupata. Nimblefoot came down with Soporific at th« third fence. Plymi, rider of Prince Eddie, had his arm broken. A very heavy fog enshrouded the course just before the Bracelet 1 was run. Bandalero was withdrawn, and Hymettius started a good iavourite, but he was erratic at the tapes, and got left several lengths. Cherry Blossom was .ut the head of a strung-out field to chc distance, where St. Elmn got on terms and beat her off. Hikakakeke then put in a claim, but St. Limn hcid his own, ami won by a neck. Red Book was a poor 'third. There was a very bad iiglit for ithe Open Hurdles, and it was impossible to pick out the runners tilt they passed the post. Kew and Beldams were leading when they passed the stand the f.rst time, bui the mare fell. Kew won comfortably at tho finish from Braeburnand Yi. Sam l'an, i'lingot, anil Player were the nc\t to finish. Three rank outsiders I lied the places .11 the concluding event, for which Mandoline was a good lavourite, Achilleus was in command at tho distance, v'ben Bode.ll- - took charge, only to give way to Conziska ou the post. For Children'! Hacking Couith at Night, Woods' Great Peppermint Ouio, Is. 54,*
In tho course of a deputation to the Prime Minister at Wellington recently, 'cays a Press Association telegram from Christchurch, Mr. 11. Burns, president of the Auckland Camber of.Commerce, stated that Mr. A. E. G. Khodes, who was closely connected with tlie Christchilrch Meat Co., was also a director of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The same speaker contended "that in one of the Canterbury companies men who were directors of a shipping company held an interest of £180,000." Mr. llhodes, seen bv a reporter to-day, said lie had read the account of the deputation, and if thcro was any inference [ that he had any monetary interest in tho Christchurch Meat Company or the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company he gave it an unqualified denial. The only frozen meat company shares he had ever held in his own interest in his life were a few in the original South Canterbury C-ompany, ivluch"were taken up to start the company,*.'and'.'.word sold shortly after it was'Started I ,'and a few shares in the Chatham-'lslands Shipping
Company, which froze fish in tie Chatham Islands. He had never advanced any of liis own money on deposit or mortgage to any frozen meat company except the Chatham Island Shipping Company. Some fifteen rears ago, when the Clirißtchurch Meat Company wished to borrow money, he had acted as a trustee with others for their debentureholders, but only for a short period, and lie did not take up any debentures personally. The Canterbury Frozen Meat Company did rent- offices which he was interested in, but beyond that he had 110 financial interest in either of tlte companies. "I do hope," said Mr. Rhodes, "that Mr. Burns, when he sees this, will at once withdraw his statement as fai as I am concerned, and that the newspapers that published his statement will print my denial. Reference to the Christdmrch Frozen Meat Company's balance-sheet would sliow that nobody is fortunate enough to hold debentures ..or,mortgagc™of. £100,000 from them excep^hareholders."
