Brown, ami a similar amount for forging a tender in tho liamo of A. James, lo which he had pleaded guilty. The Chief Justico, in passing sentence, said that tho case was tho first uudor the new law, and he accepted Kidman's statement that lie did not think ho wan doing harm, though ho was sorry that, such an impression should prevail in the mind of Kidman or anyone ojso. So far as the ovidoiico showed, Kidman's action did no misehiof to the Commonwealth, and under the circumstances ho would deal with tlio case rather as an attempt to get on unfair advantage of the Commonwealth than as serious as had been contemplated uudor tho Act. ITEMS IN BRIEF. COMMONWEALTH WHEAT SHORTAGE. Sydnoy, Juno 24. In the Legislative Assembly, Jlr. Hall announced that tlio wheat shortage amounts to 2,500,000 bushels.
