SALE OP N.Z. MEAT
MR. MASSEY EXPLAINS. Questions were asked in the Houm of Commons a few days ago about the disposal of meat commandeered by the Imperial Government, and not used for the armies, but sold to the civil popular tion at Home. There was a suggestion mado that the arrangements for the disposal of the meat were such as to conserve to certain firms their control of the market. The cable message published yesterday was brought under the Prime Minister's notice by a Dominion - reporter. "This refers,," he said, "to an arrangement that has been made by which any commandeered meat that is" placed on the market in the ordinary way is to be sold through tho salesmen or agents or firms who would have handled' the meat if there had been no war, and 110 commandeering such, as exist-s at present, the idea being tp keep the business in the channel in which it had been accustomed to pass, in order that when tho war came to an end the trade would _moro easily get back to normal conditions again. This arrangement was made here when the Imperial Government asked us to take over the meat supply. It was one of the details to which they agreed at our request."
