EXTRACTS FROM A PERSONAL LETTER, By Teleeiapli-Piess Association— Copyright Melbourne, June 24. Senator Pearce quotes extracts from a personal letter from General Godley, dated May 7, paying a tribute to the gallantry of the 4th Brigade and the Otago Battalion. _ He adds: "I am afraid it will bs impossible to s&nd accurate casuafty lists for some time, so spread out is the fighting. Companies and even battalions had to be pitched into the fight immediately, wherever they were wanted, with the result that the men got very intermingled. At present it is impossible to toll what proportion of tho brave men reported missing have been killed." He concludes by praising the splendid spirit of the men, who come out of the trenches exhausted, hungry, and harassed, but twelve hours later go back as freeh as ever, and says: "I can never say how proud I am to have such ail excellent and splendidly gallant body of men under me as 1 Jiavo tho honour to command."
