Mr. Stalling Wnlnolo, formerly in tho employ of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., for some years, and who has howl in America for tlio past three years, lias been paying a visit to Australia to transact somo private business. Mr. Walpolo was n through passongor to San Fi'anoisco by the Marama yosterday. Tho Rov. J. H. Chappcll, of Timnru, left for San Francisco yesterday by tho Marama. The reverend gentloman was accompnniod by his wifo and family of eight daughters nnd fivo sons. Mr. W. H. G force, of Georgo nnd Korsloy, Ltd., r.ccompanicd by Mrs. George, returned to Wellington yosterday from Australia after an absenco of four months. Mr. 11. J. Archer, draper, Cuba Street, will leave on a visit to Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-day. Miss Ethel Dane, and the members of tho "Glad Eyo" Comedy Company, will leave for Sydney by tlio Ulimaroa to-day, having completed a double tour of New Zealand during tho past four and a half months. Sir. A. D. li-iley willl leave for Sydney by the Ulimaroa at noon to-day. Mr. C. A. Treadwell has received a commission with tho Sth reinforcements, and will go into camp about the middlo of July. Mr. W. J. Hooson, of the firm of Messrs. Siniester, Hooson, and Co., of Wellington and Sydney, has volunteered and been accepted for active service. The Rev. F. Askew. vi:ar of St Mark's, underwent a serious operation for an internal complaint at the Bowen Street Private Hospital on Tuesday morning. His condition is causing his fronds much anxiety, though he was reported to bo a little easier yesterday. Mr. Joseph Dawson has been appointed by .the Governor to be a member of tho Wellington Land Board. Mr. J. J. H. Clapham has been elected captain of D Company, National Reserve. The death occurred in Wellington last week of Mr. R. H. W. Oliver, of Manakau. The deoeased was in Trentham Camp with the Fifth Reinforcements, and he suffered an attack of measles, which afterwards developed into pneumonia, with fatal results. He was a brother-in-law of Mr. S. A. Atkinson, solicitor, of Wellington, and Mr. Richard Hursthouse, dentist, of Willis Street. One of deceased's brothers is serving in the North Sea at present, and another is a lieutenant with the British forces in Europe. The late Mr. Oliver was accorded a military funeral. Ho was 'highly respected in Manakau, and much sympathy is felt for his wife and three young children. A very pleasing little gathering took place at the Grevtown School on Wednesday evening last, when the elder pupils and teachers gathered to bid farewell to Mr. Goldsman, who is leaving to take up a position at the Masterlon School. He was tho recipient of several parting gifts. Tho Senior Cadet Company, of which ho has been lieutenant for the last three years, presented' him with a shaving outfit. The Rev. A. J. Seame-, of tho Methodist Circuit, Dunedin, has enlisted, as a private in the Now Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Mr. and Mrs. Byron Brown, of Otaki, are touring Australia in a motor-car. Sir James Carroll is visiting Napier. News was received in Auckland on Tuesday of tho death at Shioya, Japan, of Mr. Edward Brendo.'i Parsons, who for 41 years was secretary of tho Auckland Gas Company. Mr. Parsons was born at Launceston, Cornwall, England, and was educated at Plymouth. In 1862 he left London for New Zealand on the ship Devonshire, and landed at Auckland on February 7, 1863. The late Mr. Parsons, who had passed his 80th year, is survived by three sonß —Mr. Arthur Parsons, manager of tho New Zealand Insuranco Company in Perth; Mr. Edward Parsons, manager of the British Dominions General Insurance Company in tho East; and Mr. William Parsons, engineer to tho Colonial Sugar Refining Company in Australia. —and two daughters—Mrs. Paton. wife of the New Plymouth manager of the Now Zealand Insuranco Company, and Miss Parsons, who was with hor father in Japan. John M'Miillcu, a member of tho Gsth Regiment, which participated in tho Maori War, died at tho Veterans' Home, Auckland, on Monday. He arrrved in New Zealand with his regiment in 1816, and took his discharge ui IRfio. Sinco then he had resided in Auckland. A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth records -the death of Mr. Arthur Slsindish,. aged 77 years, a very old settler, and the first Mayor of Now Plymouth. Mr. Standish was a member of tho old Provincial Council, and occupied many important public positions.
