SENTENCE PASSED ON DE WET.
SIX YEARS' IMPRISONMENT AND £2000 FINE "BUT FOR YOU, NO REVOLT" Bloemfontein, June 22. De Wot has been sentenced to six years' imprisonment and lined .£2OOO on the charges of treason in which he was found guilty. The Judge, in sentencing De Wet, said: " Unt for you we should havo heard nothing about rebellion." De Wot was acnuiUecl of any intention to join tho Germans. After judgment was delivered De W«informed the Judge that lie was actuated by deep religious convictions. (Rcc. June 23, 11.45 p.m.) Bloemfontein, June 23. The Court found that Do Wet had intended to upset the Government and proclaim an independent Republic, and accepted the contention that the movement was an armed protest, but held it was inconceivable that De Wet could havo expected to be allowed to march through the country to the rebel Maritz without the Government opposing him. Hie Court refused De Wet's application to lo allowed bail pending an appeal.
