COMBINED ATTACK ON THE TOWN OF GALLIPOLI
| BOMBARDMENT FROM THE SEA 0 BRILLIANT SUCCESS BY THE FRENCH ON LAND Paris, June 22. Tho Paris "Journal" states that the Allied fleets on Monday bombarded Gallipoli. Immense flames wero 6een in different parts of the town. It is believed that the munitions stores, docks, and several military warehouses are on fire. FIRST AND SECOND LINE TRENCHES CAPTURED. (Roc. June 23, 9 p.m.) Cairo, June 23. Official.—"After twenty-four hours' of heavy continuous fighting on Monday, the French captured the first and second lines of trenches at Gallipoli along practically tho whole of their front. "The Turks, between 7 and 8 o'clock on the evening cf June 19 expended 450 high-explosive shells on our left centre. A massed attack failed and degenerated into a tire action. "Tho same evening ouo of our brigades attacked a Turkish trench, but were unsuccessful. The Turks counter-attacked, «ud effected a lodgment in an awkward salient in our line. As the brigade was unable to recover it, the sth Royal Scots and a company of Worcesters came to its help. Tho attack was ably organised, brilliantly carried out, and successful. Prisoners state that they expected that their bombardment would have cleared us out, and were greatly disn- pointed at having made little impression, though our trenches wore much damaged. Three hundred dead Turks lay in front of ono of our brigades. At a low estimate their total dead was one thousand. . HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The following report from the High Commissioner (London, June 23, 2.30 a.m.), supplements the official account from Cairo (given above), and also adds: "On Monday morning General Gourand began an attack on a line of formidable works along Kereve Dero. By noon the second French division had stormed and captured all the Turkish first and second line of trenches opposito their front? including the Haricot redoubt. "On the-right, the first French division, after fierce fighting, took the Turkish trenohes opposite their front, but being heavily counter-attacked wero forced to fall back. The bombardment of the Turkish left was resumed, the British artillery aiding the French artillery as in the picvious attack. "11l the evening a fine attack was launched, 600 yards of Turkish first lino trenches being taken, and captured positions rotained despite heavy counterattacks. "Tho enemy lost very heavily. A Turkish battalion which was reinforcing the enemy's front was spotted by an aeroplane and practically wiped out." ° ALLIES' SUBMARINES IN SEA OF MARMORA ENEMY'S CONCENTRATION OF TROOPS TIED UP. It is Teported that fivo of the Allies' submarines have entered the Son of Marmora and prevented tho concentration of fresh Turkish troops in the Dardanelles. The struggle for the Straits continues.
