MERITED HONOURS
No one, we think, will cavil at the choice made by the Government in selecting the Hon. J. A. Millar and Sir Walter Buchanan for vacant seats in the Legislative Council. Mr. Millar was a member of the Ward Ministry, and has served in the House of Representatives for' over twenty years. Sir Walter Buchanan is on the other side in politics, and has to his credit an equally long period of useful service in Parliament as well as lengthy service in numerous other public capacities. Both gentlemen have won through to prominent offices on their own personal worth, and though opposed in politics and unlike in 6ome respects have much in common. They are alike in their outspokenness and in the strength of their _ convictions, and in their respective ways both can point to records of achievement in which they can take pride. Their long experience should enable them to render valuable service in the Upper House, and it is gratifying te feel that while congratulating the honourable gentlemen on their now honours we can also congratulate the country and tho Government on the selection made.
