The National Dairy Show was opened at mid-dav by the Prime Minister, who was specially thanked for putting himself to so much inconvenience at a time' so close to the opening of Parliament. Mr. • Massey's address is reported elsewhere. There was a good attendance for a'.first, day, somo of the, , produce . etc,,-. was judged, - and particulars of the ■ awards follow ;-x- v" Public school gardens.—Kairanga was first'in potatoes, cabbages, carrots, parsnips, turnips, and beet; West End (Palmerston North) was first in mangolds and field roots; W. J. Balsillie won in cabbage, red mangel werzel; and A. Passey in five classes of carrots, yellow mangel werzel, and Golden Tankard mangel werzel. Other prizes in this division were, won, by. ,'.A.. Matthejvs for mangel werzel and sugar mangel; J. Grindrod for swedo turnips; Wcroroa Boys' Training Farm for swede turnips; 'A. Floyd for purple top turnips; Earlo ,Vaile for turnips; and T, Webb for pumpkins and maize cob. Farm produce—Prizes, under this head fell to J. Balsillie for chaff; H. E. Hocken for clover hay; F. A. Parker for lucerne hay; and Wereroa Boys' Farm for maize ensilage. Farmers' seed and grain—Tho winners of firsts in the classes for farmers' seed and grain were: —E. A. A. Rose, J. Balsillie, F. A. Parker, E. Tanner, Boys' 'framing Farm, J.'. Murphy, J. Burmester, F. H. Outram, G. H. Currin, ;F. N.VNeave, and A. Passey. In farmers' grass seed, the firsts went to F.. S. M.'Rae, Geo. Green, H. Evans, H. Akers, and H. Callesen. Tho Potato Division.—The following were awarded firsts: R. Christensen, Boys' Training Farm, Nelson Hughes, J. M'Falkand, C. Boyles.' The vegetable awards went to F. .Wcstbury, L. Wilson, T. Webb, W. Jackson, L. Abraham, J. G. Slack, R. I). Ross. Most of the vegetable prizes were secured by F. Westbury. I. N. Blackball, of. Lepperton, won the farm display. Fruit.—Firsts in apples were,won by J. Cashing, R. Wilson, F. -Peters, G. Shailer, L. G. Duncan, P. G. Thornton, •D. H. M'Culloch, and T. S. Edwards.
