The fabric needed for this purpose must combine lightness with strength, and the greatest caro must bo taken to detent Haws, which might cost an airman his lifo. It is made from a yarn so fine and of such high quality that not more than bnlf-a-dozen spinners can produce it; and it is believed that its production is confined to Lancashire. Wo are informed on good authority that at least one large consignment for export which, il. was thought, might have been destined ultimately for the enemy, has been Btopped within the last few weeks. A Nolly, or giant petrel, a species of largy sea-bird, which makes its nest in oliffs on southern islands, was picked up on the New Brighton beach by Mr. F. \Y. Armstrong, and now is a prisoner ui an enclosure at Canterbury Museum, to which it 'has been presented, says a Christ-church paper. It is. a brownish bird, with a bright yellow bill and an extraordinarily voracious app&tito. On islands frequented by seals Nellioß are often seen hovering over tho sealers when they are engaged cutting up a. seal, and as soon as tho ruon leave the carcass t-lieso birds swoop down and gorge themselves on it. The Nelly belongs to the same order as tho , albatross—the Tubinarcs—but has a-' < much more laboured flight than that ! ] famous flier.
