SUPREME COURT BUILDING SOCIETY'S AFFAIRS Questions of liability and responsibility for losses incurred by the Johnsonvillo Co-operativo Building Society wore submitted for determination to His Honour tho Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) in the Supremo Court yestorday. It had been decided some time ago that tho society was to be dissolved, and a deed of dissolution was drawn, up, dated May 11, 1914. The questions referred to then arose for settlement. _ Plaintiff. in tho action (an originating summons) was Edgar M. Wylie, managing law olerk, of Wellington, ivhilc_ the defendants were the society and its trustees (Robert Bould. farmer, and Alfred Mills, Town. Clerk, both of Johnsonville). Mr. D. S. Smith appeared for the plaintiff, who claimed to represent members of tho society, who had given notice to withdraw, but whose notice had expired before the commencement of the dissolution. Mr. D. E. Hoggajd appeared for the trustees, who had been appointed by the deed of dissolution. Mr. T. Neave appeared for those members who had not given notice to withdraw, and who had not had an advance upon their shares. Mr. Dcuglas Jacksoa represented an "advanced' member. Mr. J. C. Peacock was also in the caso as counsel for Harriett Sophia Cook, the first mortgagee of a property of which the society held tie equity of redemption. After hearing legal _ argument, His Honour reserved decision. ARGUMENT AS TO COSTS. His Honour Mr. Justice Edwards heard further argument in the Supreme Court yesterday morning on the question of the measure of costs to be allowed the defendants in the case of the Public Trustee v. the Hutt River Board, an originating summons in which His Honour decided that the plaintiff must pay rates on property acquired by an investment of money from the Public Trustee's common fund. Mr. C. P. Skerrett. K.C., with him Mr. F. E. Kelly, appeared for tho Public Trustee, while Mr. T. F. Martin, with Mr. E. P. Bunny, appeared for the Hutt River Board. Final settlement of the costs was deferred until His Honour could discuss the matter with some of the other Judges. PRISONER SENTENCED. Leo Stephen Curtis appeared before His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) in the Supreme Court yesterday morning to be sentenced on sis charges of theft of moneys, the property of the Ohakune Borough Council. The prisoner, who had been brought back from Egyi>t to answer the charges, had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court, and had twico been remanded for sentence. The military authorities in Egypt had since signified their willingness to accept Curtis in the army for the front.. Yesterday, Mr. V. ( It. Meredith, of the Crown. Law Office, represented the Crown, while Sir John I'indlay, K.C., with him Mr. D . R. Hoggard, appeared for the prisoner. His Honour admitted the prisoner to probation for a period of two years. Conditions of the sentence were that his property should be assigned to tuo Public Trustee for tho relief of his creditors, after sufficient had been deducted to pay his passage to Egypt, where ho is to go if medically fit. This I-miejicy was extended to the prisoner mainly because ho had enlisted with the Main Expeditionary Force, and had done well jn Egypt. A PAIR OF WHITE GLOVES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Clsborne, Juno 21. The Supreme Court opened to-day. Mr. Justice Cooper was presented with a pair of white gloves, there being no criminal cases.
