Tftto top, weight, Hurakia, was a good favourite in the Hack Hurdles, and after giving a good exhibition of jumping he won nicely from Scrutineer, who fenced badly. Forelight camo from a long way back, and got third place, while Ruatangata, who did not run up to his first day s form, was tho next to finish. Brunswick was again prominent for a mile, but ho failed to run on. The others made poor showings. Fond Memory and Colonel' Webb were eeratched for the Hack Steeplechase, for wHiick Merry Lad was the best-preferred on. the machine. At tho start he and Golden Water led from Master Webb. The double saw St. Fire ruu off, and the sod wall brought down Ruffiana. The leaders continued on in-, the same order and at the double the next time Master Webb came down. The other pair ran together to the last fence, but in tho run home. Morry Lad forged ahead and won a good, race by a length.' None of. the fallen riders was injured. Cornelian was made an odds-on proposition in the Hurdles, but backers were at fault, for Aratiaua, on whom different methods were employed to-day, took charge after going six furlongs, and, jumping faultlessly, he won by a couple of lengths .from the favourite, with Braeburn in third place. Arualce ran very badly, and , was tailed off the whole way, but Sam ■ Pan, who stripped well, was prominent I ■Son a good portion of the journey, and
■should bo a much better horse for the race. Skald and Hereford were backcd in that order for the Bracelet, and the Karamu candidate, taking charge at the barrier rise, won all the way. Flingot, after being tailed off iu the early part of the race, ran on well at the finish and beat Hereford for second place. Bransfield was the next to finish. The winner was a class above the others. The same stable scored with Banian twelve months ago. Bonny was withdrawn from the June Steeples, leaving five runners. The race was a fiasco, for at different stages of the contest the whole of the competitors ei; cept Motning mat with mishaps. Leapuki ran off at the first fence, and took no part in tho race. Soporific ran off at the stand doublo, but was brought back and finished tho course. The Diver fell at the double, and Nftupata ran off, but both of them completed tho course. Morning, ridden by E. Goodwin, a son of the trainer, gave a faultless exhibition, and won all the way. AfteT his good showing to-day ho is entitled to Grand National consideration. In tho lluakawa Handicap, Deeley was given the .seat on Toki, in place of his trainer, who rode him on tho first day. Though there wore twenty-two runners, the public sent the Multiiid gelding out the hottest favourite of the meeting, only to see liim beaten out of a place. The winner turned up in tho Karamu candidate Mandoline, who scored comfortably from Black Heart, who was very unlucky in the race, and Mia Cara, tho second favourite. There were only four runners in the Final Handicap, Ardent carrying most money. The lordell representative had to give the quick-beginning Hymettius several lengths start over tlio last halfmile, and though he finished well he failed by a narrow margin. W. Adams was on Hymettius, which made his third success during tho afternoon. Five jockeys were injured at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Meeting on Friday, namely, Thompson and M'Sweeney (broken collar bones), Taylor and Ridgway (broken ribs), and Heed (severe shaking).
