THE UNION JACK.
Sir, —I have seen a letter in The Dominion by Basil Stocker about the Union Jack. A few years ago I was in England, and was shown through the Temple Buildings. For the sake of those of your readers who may not' know, I should say that the Temple was the property of the Knights Templars. The old part of the Temple Church was built in the 12tii century, and was added to in tho 13th. In the Middle Temple liall the attendant pointed out a Qag, which lie said was the original Union Jack. I asked why it was called a "Jack." He said because when James united tho Cross of St. Andrew with the Cross of St. George he called it after himself, "the Union of Jacobus" (James or Jacques), and it came to bo popularly known as the Union Jack, no doubt those using it, and the jmblio generally, doing so for the reason supplied by Mr. Stocker, and both reasons for the name may be correct'.— I am, etc... ELIZAJ3ETH A. ASHTON. "Wanganui, June 18, 1915.
