Mr. L. G. Spencer writes:—"ln your issue of June 15, amongst the casualty lists, is the name of C. B. Spencer, Canterbury Battalion. The next-of-km should Tead as follows: Leonard Granville Spencer, painter, Taknka (brother). He was in the South African War, and lias many frionds ill different parts of New Zealand and Australia.' 1 Old boys of St. Patrick's College will regret t-o hear that the latest casualty lists from the Dardanelles contaiu the names of Eric Lynch and Oscar Lynch, both ex-students of the college. The former is in the hospital at Malta, and the latter at the Victoria College Hospital, Alexandria. Private cable advices state that both are doing well. They, with their two cousins, Kildare and William Lynch, left with the Main Expeditionary Force. William Angus M'Kay Hastie, machine gun section, AVellington Mounted Rifles, who is among the casualties reported from the Dardanelles, was 2_< years of age, and was the only son of Mr. A. J. Hastie, of Manaia, Taranaki. He took up a military career at the age of 10, joining the Hawera Mounted Cadet Corps, at that time the only Mounted Cadet Corps in the world, and was acting-lieutenant for 'two years before they were disbanded a couple of years ago. He studied for the entran'co examination to the Australian Military College. He was champion rifle shot for this corps, and held a good_ average amongst the seniors in snooting competitions, holding many trophies. He was a keen sportsman, gaining trophies in gentleman riding competitions, won at the Hawera and New Plymouth Shows, and was a keen footballer in the King Country, Ho was very popular amongst his officers and brother cadets. Ho volnutcercd as a private, feeling confident that with his military experience and keenness for all things military he would soon win a commission.
Trooper William Scmple, Canterbury Battalion, killed at the Dardanelles, ivas 19 years old. He was rejected in Dunedin on the age limit, but so keen was he to get to the front that he again applied at Timani, where he was eneaped in farming pursuits. Ho was accepted and joined the 2nd Reinforcaments with the Canterbury Battalion. H© was tho son of Mr. Alex. Semple, shepherd, of Lowburn-Ferry. The doceasod has a brother (Alick) m the postal service in Trentham camp, who has enlisted. Another brother in Wellington has passed ths medical test for enlisting purposes. Lieutenant J. L. C. Morton, late of Cbristchurch, l*as been appointed to command C Company (Canterbury) of the Seventh Reinforcements, now in camp at Trentham. Lieutenant Melton has lately been rosident in Hawke s Bay, where he took an active parti-in tho work of the Territorials, and had command of a country company. «ml« he was resident in Chnstchiirch, Lieutenant Merton was in the Christ s Collogo Cadets, in which he hold ft llGluPTiant's commission. On leaving C°!' e S 9 he joined the Christ's College Rifles, in which he was a corporal and afterwards held a lieutenant's commission in tho old Imperial Rifles.
