Yesterday was the sixty-first anniversary of the day when the well-known coastal steamer Stormbird made her first journey. The Stormbird. which has tho unique distinction of being the oldest steamer in the world in commission, is a steel screw vessel of 217 tons gross, and was launched In 1854 by Laurie and Co., Glasgow. The Stormbird has passed through many hands in the course of her long and interesting career, her present owners being the Wanpanui Steam Packet Company. The ketch Kcrern is expected to leave Auckland for Niue, Cook lelande, about the end of this week. An exchange states that owing to the bad harvest in Australia, the detained enemy ships C 3, C 4, C 6, and CU are at present under charter to load wheat at American ports for the Commonwealth. It is becoming generally recognised that shipowners arc in for a prolonged period of prosperity, even after the termination of the war, and a number of capitalists have been quietly - buying the shares of cargo boat' companies (says "Fairplay" in its issue of April 22). Notwithstanding the advance in price which has taken place recently, there are a- large number of shipping shores, which, based on present values of shipping property and the outlook, appear to- be very cheap. According to advice received hy the Marline Department, the Government steamer Hinemoa finished her work at Dog Island lighthouse on Wednesday, and proceeded on to Waipapapa Point. On arrival there, however, the weather proved too rough to make a landing, so a course was shaped for the Bluff. It is understood that Mr. J. Blair Ma6on, engineer to the Ot&so Harbour Board, will leave for Melbourne shortly for the purpose of endeavouring to effect the sale there oi the board's tug Koputoi and also of dredge 404. The dredge is at present under charter to the Victorian Government-. and is being worked in Melbourne Harbour, but her lease will not expire till February. Heavy weather delayed the Poherua. on the run up tho coast from Lytteiton to Wellington yesterday, consequently her departure for Weetnort and Greyinouth has been postponed till to-day. 'Nelson and New Plymouth cargo will be taken in at Wellington by the Corinna on Thursday. June 17. The German motor schooner Elfriede was at the Tongan Group, when war broko out, and she was, of course, detained by the authorities. According to the New Zealand Gazette of May 20 the Fiji Government is now inviting tenders for tho chartcr of the vessel.
