THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Glekcoe.] Owners should liote that at 9 o'clock to-night entries dose for tho Winter -Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. . Our special correspondent at Hustings, telegraphing last flight, stated that the.-o had been little or 110 rain there, and the gnuig was certain to be sound for the meeting which opens to-day. Immensity has bee scratched for the Hawke's Bay Hunlles to be run at Hastings to-day. In the big steeplechase at Hastings today Soporific will be ridden by H. Thompson. Tho same horseman will be on Doon in the Hack Hurdles. I''. TiUey took three horses to the Hastings meeting, Ardent, Jiia Cara, and liew. The first-named is the only one engaged on the opening day, but the other pair will be given a run 011 Saturday. Jlr. J. Bull intends trying Master Lupm over hurdles, and the gelding has been sent to AVanganui to be schooled. Riders engaged in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase to-day areGlenmore (Traill), Soporific (Thompson), L'eapnki (H. Tricklebank), Bonny (J. O'Connell), Naupata, (H. Jl'Sweeney), The Diver (A. M'Donald), Ifaku (A. Trieklebanls), and Country Boy (D. Cameron). In the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, Hereford will be ridden by Deerey, Player (T. Jones), Aruake (A. Gordon), Cornelian (S. Reid), Vi (W. Adams), Waipunoa (H. Trickleliank), Braeburn (H. Thompson), ajid Araliatia (H. M'Sweeney). Queen's Post is the possessor of a doubt-ful-looking leg, and is an unlikely starter at tho Hastings meeting. Vi has turned very sour since tho bad fall she had at Hastings in the Autumn, and she regularly tries to run. off now when being schooled. Proceedings at Hastings to-day will cemmcncc with the Hack Steoplechaae (two miles). The field is not a good one, and as the country takes a lot of jumping, several of lie runners mar fail to get Tound. Bollin, Pnremata, and Grey itenown will be the best liked. Good reports come from Napier as to the track work of Sensitive, who is engaged in the Winter Handicap. Other well-fancied candidates are Haumakalca (Deeley), and Whakahoki. The lastnamed gels a distance well. In the absence of Queen's Post Waipunoa will he much fancied in the big hurdles. Aratiatia, who jnmns well, and has the advantage of a light weight, m-y be the best of the others. The well-bred Merry Jack, Hurakia, Doon, and Ruatangata are a fancied quartet in the Hack Hurdles. Master Webb (Traill) has most form to recommend him amongst the poor lot engaged in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase.
