TOWN HALL IN WAR TIME

AN ANIMATED SCENE.

At the Town Hall at present every inch of space that can be spared, • and much that cannot without some little inconvenience, is" devoted to the pressing needs of an unprecedented time — either to the big Carnival bazaar in aid of the woundea and their dependents, or to that faithful band of women who toil day in and day out preparing comforts for the troops in camp and abroad and the Hospital Ship. For some time past the Council Chamber has only been permitted to assume its native dignity on meeting nights—for the rest it is a busy workroom, where rolls of flannel enter to come forth as shirts, pyjamas, etc., either complete or cut out ready for the machine. Here also parcels are made up for the needs of the moment. Such has been tho pressure that tho Military Hospital Guild has had to take separate premises in the New Zealand Dental Company's building in Mercer Street. This branch of the groat work that is going forward received yesterday a wonderful lot of goods from tho Wairarapa,' where the ladies appear to be> every bit as energetic as the men are f onerous. A display of blankets, scarves, res&ing-gowns_, socks, balaclavas, etc., was made outside these premises yesterday, and were photographed as a memento of Wairarapa's generosity. Not only has the Council Chamber been commandeered, but the councillors' room is now the headquarters of the ladies' executive. During the whole of 11m week the Mayor's room is being used r.s a tea. and music room to forward the candidature of the Tramwaymen's candidate in the "Queen" contest, and il the corridors, are explored thev will be found to be in the possession of Carnival workers. This patriotic invasion must be in a- measure distracl ing to tbp staff, but they manage, to stand it all with perfect equanimity, and where an extra pair of hands is needed to handle a case or roll a bale ready assistance is never lacking.
