GERMAN SPY HOODWINKS MR. BRYAN
AMMUNITION BUYER UNDER FALSE COLOURS. GIVEN SAM CONDUCT HOME. London, June 16. The State Department at Washington has ordered an investigation into charges that a supposed doctor, Anton Meyer Gerhard, of the German Red Cross, who was recently raising funds in the United States, was given safe conduct home to Germany, when he really was Dr. Alfred Meyer, head of the Ammunition Purchasing Department for the German Government. It is alleged that Meyer acted as a spy while ostensibly upon a Red Cross tour. New York newspapers point out that Dr. Meyer Gerhard was ostensibly Count Bernstorff's Emissary to Berlin, but was really Alfred Meyer, Chief of the Ger man Armv Snnplie's Denartment, ant! who is taking information of great-im-portance gathered from munition brokers and manufacturers. His Rod Cross mission to America was a farce. He Teally oiipie to purchase war supplies and obtain information as to the United States military preparedness. Mr. Rrvan was hoodwinked into securing Meyer eafe conduct. LIEGE CITIZENS EXECUTED INTENSE ANGER IN BELGIUM. Amsterdam, June 16. The execution of eight Liege citizens for alleged espionage produced intense anger. Twenty others are still imprisoned and great anxiety was expressed as to their fate. Some relief was afforded when a telegram from the Kaiser was exhibited alongside the list of those executed stating that in future every court-mar-tial death sentence must have the Kaiser's sanction.
