MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A YOUNG WOMAN'S LAPSE Mr. W. G.Riddell, S.M., presided at yesterday's sittings of the Magistrate's Court. As the indictable cases, which had been set down for tearing, were adjourned until later dates, the business of the morning was transacted in a brief space of time. A young woman named Mercia King appeared on remand for sentence for theft. She had pleaded guilty last week to stealing a ring valued at £3 10s. The ring was recovered from a pawnbroker, wlio liad purchased it for the sum of 10s. Chief-Detective Boddam informed the Magistrate that a lady in the City was willing to give tho young woman employment, and, in these circumstances, His Worship might perhaps record a conviction and order tho accused to como up for sentence when called upon. Tho Magistrate adopted the course suggested, making it a condition that the accused should report to the police matron onco a week for six months. An order was also made for tho return of tho ring to the owner, the accused to restore the sum of 10s. to the pawnbroker by payments of 2s. per week. REMANDS GRANTED. Appearing on bail, Robert l'itcalthly was remanded until June 22 on six charges oi failing to account for sums of money tlie property of David K. Blair. Mr. F. E. Petherick appeared, for tlie accused in the absence of Mr. T. M. AVilford. Bail was granted on the same terms as on previous occasions. George Penman was remanded until Juno 19 on two charges of indecently assaulting a girl under tho age of 16 years. OTHER GASES. On a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, George Hunter, against whom there wero several .previous convictions, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. The same accused was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. A first offender, who 'had been found helplessly drunk in Willis Street on June 6, was convicted and discharged.
