AUSTRALIAN RECRUITS
Although Australia is welcoming recruits and putting all acceptcd men under canvas at oncc on 'the terms and conditions as set out in yesterday's Dominion, it is necessary to remember that the requirements as to fitness, etc., pre fairly stringent, and not necessarily identical with , those in New Zealand. In Sydney one day last week, of 230 men enlisting, only about 130 were passed as fit. No men, for instance, are taken who wear sets of' false teeth. Some useful hints have been issued by the Australian military authorities for intending recruits. They are as follow: — "If you cannot proceed to the camp on the day of your enrolment; ask for and obtain leave, which may fee granted for one or two days only. If the 'eavo is approved, your white paper, enrolment form, will be marked accordingly, and you must attend at the barracks at 1.45 p.m. on the day your leave expires (Saturday -10.45 a.m.) in order to proceed to the camp at Liverpool. Bring your enrolment form with you, as without it you will not be allowed to go to camp. "If you wish to jom the Light Horse you must thoroughly understand that only expert busnmen are required. The fact of having lived on, a farm all your life, or having been reared amongst horses, is not sufficient evidence that you are an expert rider. The test is a most, severe one, and if you do not come up to the* standard of being master of the horse you will certainly be rejected. You are advised not to take any chances in this respect, as judges at the test cannot' be deceived. You may misinform the enrolling officer, but you cannot blind the judges.
"You must be prepared and consent to undergo inoculation against smallpox and entoric fever. If you will not consent, do not present yourself for enrolment. "There are no vacancies at present in the. Army Service Corps, Army Medical Corps, Motor Transport Corps, or Engineers. Should you, however, desire to join any of those units your paper will bo marked as reinforcements for the particular corps you wish to join, and when vacancies occur may be transferred. Pending such transfer you will be attached to the infantry. , "Seafaring men cannot bo acceptcd for service without producing their discharge from the ship or steamer. "If you have been sent to Sydney by the police, and arc rejected as medically unfit- a railway pass will bo issued to enable you to return home. , Apply for this at the enrolling office after 2 o'clock on the day you arc rejected."
