The French offensive in the West is .still progressing successfully, and is causing no small anxiety to the Germans, who have been obliged to detach reinforcements troops from other fronts. General Joffra is understood to be testing the strength of the enemy on the outer defences of tho great German stronghold of Metz, iu Lorraine. The lie direct- is given to recent German communiques relating to tho operations on the Western front. Heavy fighting is reported from the Baltic provinces, and there have been some sharp encounters in Poland, where an incipient offensive of a more or less minor character appears to have been nipped in the bud by the Russians. In Galicia the great conflict still rages, and on the Russian showing the big German offensive is under control, but the An stria 11 a and-. Germans claim imgortant successes. The Italian operations on the Austrian frontier defences are progressing satisfactorily. In Gallipoli tho Allies and tho Turks are stated to have settled down to a trench war. An impressive memorial service to the fallen Colonials—Australians and New Zealanders —has been held at St. Paul's - -Cathedral in London. The British Premier, Mr. Aaquith, has delivered an interesting speech on the new political situation.
