VICTORIA COLLEGE

MONTHLY MEETING. At last night's meeting of tTie Victoria College Council, Mr. C. Watson presided, and there were also present the Hon. A. L. Herdman, the Rev. W. A. Evans, Dr. Hector, Messrs. C. B. Morison, K.C., W. H. Morton, A. R. Atkinson, C. Wilson, W. Ferguson, and T. R. Fleming. Leave of absence was granted to oir Robert Stout, the Hon. A. T. Magin" nity, M.L.C., the Hon. J. GAitken, M.L.C., and Dr. Prendergast Knight. For the information of- the council, Professor T. A. Hunter, hon. secretary of the Tutorial Class Committee, forwarded a report of the decisions of the committee. The report was as follows: —"The committee has appointed Mr. C. Watson chairman, and has decided—(l) That every class must be a University tutorial one, and that 310 subject will be treated as in a technical school for trade or professional purposes. (2) That no fcutor will bo ap* pointed to a- class until at least twenty members have signed the class pledge. (3) That the salary of all tutors will be £72 per year per class, payable quarterly. (Each class meets once a week for two hours during twenty-four weeks in each year*, there are fortnightly essays ; as far as possible thb tutor pays attention to the individual need or the students). (4) .Having interviewed Mr. Condlifie, the committee appointed 'him tutor of the class in economics. Mr. Condliffe graduated M.A. with first-class honours ill ecouomics at Canterbury College, and has recently received an appointment in the omCc or the Government Statistician, and was previously in charge of a tutorial class in Christchurch. (5) That the, tutor m economics has been authorised to expend up to £20 for books for a class library, and the committee is making provision for tho care and insurance of the library. (6) That monthly meetings of tho committcc will be held:on the Tuesday before tho second Wednesday in each month. It was decided that the sum of £20 bo voted for the purchase of text-books, which become tho property of tho council. Also that tho salaries, (hii) be paid to tutors in two equal instalments at tho end of tho first and second quarOn tho motion of the Finance and General Purposes Committee it was decided that Professor Pickets donation f£s3 6s. Bd.) and the subsidy thereon be expended by the Professor of Mathematics for the purchase of models and books for the classes in mathematics. It was further decided that the application of R. H. Knapp for/efund of fees paid (1914) previous to the award of a: bursary be granted; also that o] C A Berendsen, who has returned from military service, for credit for fees paid in 1914. ' Payments for the month amounted to £92.3 5s 7d., after which there remained a credit balanco of £1400 13s. lOd.
