CARNIVAL QUEEN
io YESTERDAY'S VOTING tNUMEROUS CHANGES ' The contest for Queen of the Carnival te is becoming interesting, and the voting a, shows this. Yesterday's count brought about many changes, but Miss Senior, 16 the Hutt Valley candidate, is still at e " the top, and appears to have a lease in of the place. The Commercial Travell" lers have succeeded in getting their nominee into second place, Miss Low is ,y third', and Miss M'Kegg is fourth. The results of yesterday's voting aro given :e below: —. if Miss A. M. Senior (No. 14), Hutt ![* Valley 1 I. Miss K. Hempton (No. 5), Te Aro Residents 15 TOWN HAUL BAZAAR. i The bazaar being held in the Town Hall every night this week almost - eclipsed on its second night the brilliant ° success of the lirst night. The dull l 9 interior of the hall ie transformed into - such a gay place as to give a really joyous carnival atmosphere, but the mere sightseer is soon reminded that his business of the evening is not to see 6ights alone. Young ladies with engaging manners and fascinating garb, experts in salesmanship, at once fasten upon anybody with even modest appearances of wealth, and if he has any current coin _ he must be very clever to _ retain of it so small a remnant as will pay his home car-fare. They are tireless workers, these girls. The astonishing part of the business is that everybody seems to enjoy it. The man who parts with his cash looks happier than the !' man wlio does not-, and none are happier than those who have to confess, with assumed ruefulness, that they have j none at all left. All the while there is music and other entertainment. Last night the music was provided by Mr. Turner's Mandoline Band, and ex-pupils of Miss Flora Shaw gave displays of _ national dances. ORPHANS' CONCERT. t. The members of the Wellington Or--10 phans' Club are leaving no stone unturned in making their concert in tho Concert Chamber this evening the concept of the Carnival. A splendid programme has been arranged, featuring _ the best talent the club possesses and will include items from tho _ following Orphans:—W Thompson, Signor A.. w Truda (flute solo), Hamilton Hodges, 17 Culford Bell ("Spotting," a tale of the rt war), H. F. Wood, C. Clarkson (baritone solo, "Good Old New Zealand"), Rev. A. E. Hunt ("The Old Cremona"), H. Moschini (clarionet solo), L. Exton, Sydney Alhvright, E. Luks, and, in - addition, the Orphans' Club's Orchestra, under Orphan H. Moschini, will render items. Orphans Petersen and I-lollow act as accompanists. Tho plan is now open at the Bristol Piano Company. The total proceeds are to go to the Wounded Soldiers' , and Sailors' Fund. 5, FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION'S GALA. j Given fine weather, the Wellington Football Association's Sports Carnival, which is to be held on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, should prove a red letter sports day as far as Wellington is concerned. For the past week various committees have been working hard, and all tho arrangements are well in band. There will be a procession- - through the principal streets- of the City commencing at the Government Printing Office at 2.15 p.m. Although the gala " is being held to further the interests of the Sports candidate for the Carnival • Queen, all other Carnival Queen candi- < date representatives have_ been asked r ' to take part in the procession. It must be understood, however, that no collt lections, etc., other than those .for the E Sports candidate will be allowed to be J, taken up on the Basin Reserve. On :- arrival at the Basin a sports gathering will be hold. There will be all kinds of side shows, stalls, games, etc. The gala will be continued till after 10 p.m. oil Saturday. MONEY FOR TICKETS. Owing to the tendency to laxity in " connection with Queen voting tickets, the returning officer and general secretary (Mr. E. J. Colley) has issued the . Mowing letter to the secretaries of the candidates' committees:— _ "I wish to call your attention to a resolution passed by tho executive dealing with the matter of books of tickets
which havo been issued. The resolution reads as follows: —"Tjisit secretaries of all candidates' committees bo advised that the money duo for books of tickets must bo paid to'the secretaries or treasurer of tho Patriotic Socioty not later than 5 p.m. oil ihc 25th instant; further, that should more books of tickets be required same will be issued against cash and a refund mado for those remaining unsold and returned on tno following Monday, 28th instant. ". ls desired to draw your attention to the importance of this matter, as tickets polled and not piid for will necessarily havo to be treated as informal. It was Further resolved that the > returning officer had no authority to accept blank cheques on behalf of any candidates, ft is therefore desired that you will take the necessary steps to insure tho carrying out of these resolutions and thus assist in preventing any friction arising in connection with ( tho polling and recording of the votes. EASTBOURNE CARNIVAL On Saturday next Eastbourne is to hold a carnival of its own to raise funds for the New Zealandbounded Soldiers and Sailors and their dependents. That the, Carnival is subsidiary to the big Carnival now in progress in Wellington is vouched for by the official programme, which contains excellent portraits of all the Queen candidates, and for that reason has a value ot its own. It is understood that all tno "O.ueens" will have hard-working committees at J£astboume_ on. Saturday. The fun is to be traintained from I p.m. until midnight. The, Carnival Committee has induced the council to reduce the fare to 6d. return, and to run a late boat, which will leave Rona Biv at midnight. Eastbourne is not supporting any particular "Queen candidate, and each purchaser or an admission ticket will be entitled to register one 'vote in favour of any one ot the fifteen candidates, and the candidate polling the highest number of votes will derive the benefit of the whole ot the funds. The poll closes at 9 P-'J 1 ' on Saturday.- The Mayor (Mr. J. I. Luke) is, tlio carnival chairman, Mr. C. A. Marquis is the organiser, and Mr. J. D. Avery is the secretary. * MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.
