COLONIALS HOLD STRONG POSITIONS

1 STEADY PROGRESS IN GALLIPOLI SUCCESSFUL FRENCH OFFENSIVE RAPID AND BRILLIANT OPERATIONS ITALIANS PRESSING FORWARD BELGIANS CROSS THE YSER The war news to-day is comparatively light with regard to newdevelopments. The most interesting item is the reference to the Australians and New Zealandcrs in Gallipoli. The colonial troops are now firmly established in what is said to bo an impregnable position, while Maidos and Kilid Balir are well within their grasp. A successful coup has also been achieved by the French Division. The Italian reports record rapid and brilliant operations in the development of their offensive against the Anstrians, and a. heavy-gun bombardment of the fortress of Malborghetto is in progress. Thero is scanty news from the Eastern front, and of what there is, the most outstanding feature is the enemy's claim to an important victory north-west of Mosciska, the Russian position over a front of 43 miles being stormed, with a loss cf 16,000. The Belgians have scored a point against the Germans by a successful dash across the Yser, the enemy's line being driven back at Westende and near Nieuport. North of Arras hot fighting still continues.
