FRENCH CANNON
German inventors and scientists hare devoted much ingenuity in this war to devising some form of trenoti cannon to hurl explosives into the opposing trenches, but none of these inventions has been rery successful. The Gorman bombthrower (minewerfor) ia about the best of them, but its proportion of misses is' unduly large. During the Tecent engagements against the British forces,' the Germans brought a new trench gun into use for tlio -first time, and the new implement has been promptly dubbed "pip squeak" by the irrepressible British infantry. "This creature," write a private in the London Scottish, "squirts abomination in the shape of scrap iron, ginger beer bottles, and apparently any odd refuse that is at hand. As long as we keep our heads down we consider ourselves .safe from rifle fire," the writer states. "We all, however, have to take our turn at guard, and this entails a certain amount of risk, as. of course, it necessitates exposing oneself." It is stated that the best tTencto cannon is a small instrument used by the British forces, which is really an up-to-date application of the old Roman catajult.
