ALLEGED THEFT OF MONEY

MILITARY OFFICER BEFORE THE COURT. (By Telesraph.—Prcee Association.) Dunedln, June 14. 'At the Milton Court to-day, before Mr. Acheson, S.M., Captain John Robert Henderson was charged with stealing on February 18, 1913, £20, portion of a sum of £57 12s. 4d. paid to him on behalf of the 14th South Otago Kegiment, by Colonel A. E. Stewart. In connection with this charge there was also taken the charge of that on Fobiuary 18, 1913, making a false entry, "To refund range, £37 12s. 4d., in a book belonging to or in possession of accused's- employers." The case for the prosecution was that £57 12s. 4(1. was paid over to accused by Colonel Stewart, that sum belonging to the regiment. Before paying the cheque into the bank tho accused drew £20 in cash, the amount actually credited being £37 12s. 4d. In accounting for this, accused mado an entry in the regimental book, "Refund range, £37 12s. 4d." Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial on both charges. Tho next charge was that on February 1, 1913, at Milton, accused did steal £5, received from John Mac Gibbon Shanks, for ammunition sold by him to Shanks, the property of the New Zealand Government. Evidence was given For tlie prosecution that accused had no authority to sell ammunition. Owen M'Guggan, Defenco storekeeper, said lie was receiver of money for ammunition. Accused had not paid him. Accused was committed for trial. The next chargo was that on February 20, 1912, accused stole £2 10s., received from David Moyes for ammunition sold by him to Moyes, the property of tho New Zealand Government. Accused was committed for trial. Accused was also Charged with stealing £2 Bs., a portion of a sum paid to him on behalf of the Government for payment of a party of tho 14th Regiment. The case for the prosecution was that the money should have gone to pay the wages of the rearguard at Sutton Camp in April, 1913, and that although the men concerned had signed tho pay roll beforehand, they had not been paid. Accused was committed for trial. Two other' chargos were struck out. Accused was admitted to bail in ouo surety of £200 and his own recognisance of £200, on the chargo of stealing £20, and his own recognisance of £100 on the other charges.
