The j Minister especially asked the council if . it would advise ihe volunteers not to . loave their «mployment until callod i upon by the Defence Department to do a so. a It was decided to reply expressing the r council's pleasure that volunteering was progressing favourably, and suggesting that the Government bo asked to legislate in the direction of making a charge on the State, to educate the children of ° fallen soldiers (irrespective of rank) with a viow to having them fitted for tho Civil Service, and thereby doing _ away with_ the necessity of employing . alien enemies in the Service. f Tho secretary of the Carnival Sports - Committee (Mr. R. J. Hill) was grante ed the use of the recreation ground on • Saturday, June 2G, subject to satisfacII tory arrangements being made with tho [ Wellington Rugby Union. I The stationmaster at Petone (Mr. R. s Simons) replied to the council's statement regarding alleged pilfering of coal, to the effect that after making inquiries ho was unable to obtain any evij dence that coal was being removed by t unauthorised persons. Mr. Simons added that if the council took delivery of its coal more promptly there would be s less opportunity of its being interfered s with. f The council decided to reply stating s that the facilities for unloading coal S and also the booking of tickets were i totally inadequate at Petone Station, 1 and asking the stationmaster to use his hest endeavours to have the same remea died. d : Judging by the attendance at the gaslight display of furs by the Empire Fur i. Company last evening at Messrs. John--7 ston and Co.'s rooms, a successful sale by f auction to-day may be predicted. The British, . French, Russian, Italian, and Belgians f are represented by the different players, and by a unique form of table skittles the _ different forms of fortifications are over- , come as in actual warfare. It is an interesting and instructive pastime for adults as well as children. Tho game is j a local production.
