NOTES AND COMMENTS
[Br Gtsscoz.] Friday next is general entry day for the Wellington Racing Clift's Winter Meeting. Secretary A. E. Whyte has already received a number of entries for the different events, and he anticipates that when the lists aro closed the total will be well up to the standard of previous years. The Soult gelding" Aimirell was again submitted to auction on Saturday at Christchurch, nnd an additional .£2 ss. was secured for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The thirteen-year-old Officer gelding Medallist is now trained at Trentham. .. At the conclusion of the racing at Ellerslie M. Hobbs wont for a holiday to ltatorua. He is returning home via the Wanganui River. Gold Wave carried off the leading handicap at tho Kynoton (Victoria) May meeting from Little Friar and Kingling. Gold Wave was bred in New 'Zealand, and was got by Goldeu Knight, the disappointing son of Wallace—Aula. Chaniinado is now trained by P. Jones at Ellerslie, and is to be tried over fences. He may do better over fences than ho has done on the flat. Phosphorous was put up to auction at Auckland on Friday, but tailed to chango hands. Fashion Plato has developed soreness, and will not fulfil her Hastings engagements. In addition to the horses named yeatet* day, Cousin. Jack and Stockade will also have to be taken out of the Hack Steeplechases at Napier. Tho former won a stake of over at Dannevirke, and Stockade put himself out by his succcss at Otaki. Mr, J. W. White, a well-known supporter, of hunting in the Hawke's Bay district, is at present in town seeking medical attention. He is returning on Thursday to see his horses racing at the Hastings meeting. ' . Mr. G. Hirst, formerly a well-known amateur horseman, is going to the front with the next reinforcements. At present ho is in camp at Trentham. Another well-known amateur rider in Mr. R. Vivian is shortly to arrive at Trentham. If numerical strength counts for much Sir Geo. Clifford, should win more two-year-old races next season than any other owner. At present his trainers, the Cutts Bros., havo no fewer than sixteen youngsters in. training. His Majesty the King was still Tacing his horses when the last mail. left England. He was tepresented by Jungle Cock in the First Year of sSth Newmarket Biennial Stakes, but the colt was easily accounted for by Mr. P. Neikke's Sydian, a colt by Symington from Nydian. What is known as tho New Derby will' be run at Newmarket to-daj. The Derby is usually run at Epsom, but this year the English Jockey Club abandoned, at the request of Premier H. H. Asquith, all racing fixtures except the Newmarket meeting. The race will doubtless be over the Derby distance—one wile and a half. While the victorious horse will not be regarded as the regular Derby winner, there will be keen rivalry to win what may be termed the special war Derby. The King's colt, Friar Marcus, was entered for the Derby, and may run in this special race.
