TURN OF THE TIDE IN GALICIA

4 RUSSIAN RECOVERY I ENEMY FORCED BACK ACROSS THE i DNIESTER i FRENCH SUCCESSES NORTH : OF ARRAS ' GERMANS HARD PRESSED BY ALLIES | NEW ZEALANDERS' ; BRAVE STAND I i ■ ' HOT CORNER I GAUJPOU MR. LLOYD GEORGE'S APPEAL ; ■ TO THE WORKERS There is good news from Galicia to-day. The Russians have made a splendid recovery, and have driven the enemy back across the Dniester, as well as inflicting heavy bio ws along other portions of the Galioian front. In the Western theatre the progress of the French offensive has been maintained; there has been some lively fighting on the British-Belgian line in Flanders, where the use. of poisonous gas has enabled the Germans to score a temporary advantage, the last state of the Hum, however, being worse than the first; and the steady • pressure of th® Allies is gradually, so it is stated, forcing the enemy ,'back upon, his second line of defence, where there are formidable positions to be reduced. The Italians continue to progress in their war i with Austria, and have gained the heights which command Monfal--1 cone. In Gallipoli the Allies are reported (from Athens) to have cap- | tured Maidos; fierce fighting is proceeding. There is a thrilling story • by Captain Bean of a gallant stand by New Zealanders in defence of a captured trench opposite Q.uinn's Post, a stand endured in a perfect Hades of shrapnel and high explosive. In Britain, Mr. Lloyd George is touring the great industrial centres on a recruiting campaign for his army of munition workers—lathes, machinery, and men are his battalions, and the British flag is to be hoisted over every work--1 shop.
