HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP
THE ELECTION DISPUTE. Mr. H. L. Nathan has forwarded for publication the following copy of a letter be has addressed to the secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board:— The Secretary, Wellington Harbour Board, Wellington, Dear Sir, RE APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN. As I was advised that the election of our chairman was invalid, and it was important, in the interest of the board, that his position should be placed beyond doubt, 1 moved, at last meeting, a resolution that the board should obtain an independent opinion from a King's Counsel upon the legal point raised by me. _ As my motion was negatived, by a majority of the board, I have, at my own expense, and in tbe interest of the section which I represent, as well as in the interest of the board, taken the opinion of Sir John Findiay, K.C., who definitely confirms the opinion of Messrs. Young and Tripe, that the election of our chairman was invalid. I regret that owing to my having acquiesced in the second election, counsel advises that I personally cannot move the Court, as I would like to do, but I would like to point out that it is open to any ratepayer to challenge the election which would leave Pae board and the chairman in a very unfortunate position. I have much pleasure in enclosing Sir John Findlay's, K.C., opinion for the perusal of members of the board. I have drawn the board's attention to this matter, and so far as I om concerned it is at an end, but it is important that some step should bo taken to put tlio matter right.—l am, etc., (Sgd.) HUBERT L. NATHAN. June 12, 1915.
