OLD NAVALS
ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert and presentation of prize's in connection with the Old iNavuls Defence ltiile Club was held in tho N avals Boating Society's Rooms last night.. President J. Rabe presided over a large gathering. i n presenting tho prizes Colonel Collins spoke in , xemiiiiscent strain of tho onrly dctys of musketry in Neiv Zealand. Ho urged that every young man should know how to shoot" at tho present day. This was absolutely necessary. In calling on Vice-President Judd to propose the toa6t of "The Army and Navy and the -Boys at the Front." the chairman said that it was stated that the Navals and ottar riHo clubs were not doing their share in the present great war. This was not so. The Old Navals were represented by eleven members at the front, one of whom, Lieutenant Hugo, had died for his country. Jhe toast was replied to by PettyOfficer Martin. Later in tho ©veiling speaking to the toast of "The Dominion JMo Association " Colonel Collins said that this year they had had to forgo their annual meeting on account of the war, but he hoped that shortly they would be able to recommence this meeting again. When they did start again the speaker hoped that the entry wouli be a big one, and the interost spurred on by recent events -would be phenomenal. He was sure that when the members of the National Reserve took up shooting, as they probably would, they would take such interest in rifle meetings that it would be hard to make them give it up. Other toasts during tho evening were: "Donors of Prizes" (proposed by Mr," J. Alexander, and responded to by Pres. J. Rabe); "Club Chajnpion" (proposed by Mr. F. E. Franklyn, and replied to by President J, Rabe); "Dominion Rifle Association" (proposed by the chairman, coupled with the name of Colonel Collins); "Kindred Clubs," and "The Ladies."
