A NOVEL ENCOUNTER • * The idea of a duel between a German aeroplane and a British cruiser "would have excited derision.a year or two ago if depicted in the pages of a novel. Nevertheless this spectacle was witnessed by a crowd of English holiday makers at Deal recently. It was on a bright, sunshiny morning, when the enemy aeroplane was first sighted coming in over tho eastern part of tho uoodwtn Sands, which is in practically a direct line from Ostend. Tho weather Tas fairly bright, with a keen wind of moderate strength. The airman was flying high, and the course he was steering was taking him towards the coast of Kmgsdown, tlireo or four miles • west of Deal. The first intimation people had of the approach of the invading aircraft was when a patrolling cruiser in the Downs fired upon it. The sound of tho guns brought people on the front and cliffs at Deal, Walmer, and ICingsdown, and they witnessed the explosions as the bombs thrown from the aeroplane struck tho sea in the vicinity of the anchored ships. The aeroplane, which was of the Taubo pattern, did not arrive within a mile of the shore at Deal, but it is believed to have been over tho lan 3 at ICingsdown,, and in a fifcld there something which was apparently an incendiary bomb fell, as tho grass and gorse were burnt and scorched for some distance around the point where it struck. News of the presence of the German aeroplane over tho Downs was promptly made known around the southorn coast, and the authorities made very complete arrangements for dealing with any attempted aerial invasion. Scouting aeroplanes were soon up in search of tho undesirable visitor, but when tho warship commenced firing upon him ho quickly started to return across the Channel, and was soon lost to view.
