CIVIC AFFAIRS

MEETING OF HIE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were alw pießent: Councillors G. Frost, R. A. Wright, J. Hutche3on, J. E. Fitzgerald, W. J. Thompson, J. Godber, M. F. Luckie, A. It. Atkinson. W. H. Bennett, L. M'Kenzie, W. H. P. Barber, W. T. Hildret'h, A. Veitch. and J. Fuller. It was. decidod that the petitioners for the wood-blocking of Courtenay Place West (north side) be informed that their request will be considered when the Estimates for the year are being dealt with. Authority was granted to purchase the lease of a portion of the Market Hall Deserve upon terms recommended by the City Valuer. The Finance Committee were granted authority to settle a claim for damages in connection with a recant collision _ between two tram-cars, and the council decided to deny liability in connection with a claim for damages on account of a collision between a motorcar and tramway centre pole. The council decided that where enoroachment fees cannot be collected the property owners in question be given notice that the land is required and that the fences must be removed. In the event of the fences not being moved the City Solicitor will be instructed to prosecute. The Fire Brigade Committee recommended (.hat the attendance of a fireman at theatres during the progresß of religious services be dispensed with. —The recommendation was adopted. It was resolved to allocate a cab stand in Panama Street, as recently recommended. The Reserves Committee reported that they had instructed the City Engineer to report generally on the necessity for the erecting of an efficient reservoir at Day's Bay. . An expenditure of £50 was authorised to be incurred in erecting a new fence at Bidwill Street, as recommended by the City Engineer. On the request of Councillor Bonnett it was decided that a return should bo laid before nest meeting showing the receipts and expenditure or the tramway system for the months of April and May. The Mayor informed Councillor Fuller that the matter of providing a shelter at Quintan's Corner had not been lost sight of.
