ONE HUNDRED DOCTORS
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. The Defenea Jlinistor (the Hon. J. Allen) made some further remarks concerning the demand from the Imperial authorities for more medical men from New Zealand. He said that the suggestion had come from the Home Government and not from the New Zealand Government, and the call was for 100 medical men if New Zealand could supply them. "I do not say that we can," said the Minister, He had been advised that, after due regard had been, given to the country's requirements, we could send 100 men; but he was not yet sure of it. All the doctors. who went would be required to go through a course of training in the Army Medical Corps. Preference in the selection would be given to unmarried men. The term of the engagement would be for one yenr or for any longor period required. The remuneration would be £1 4s. a day from the day of leaving New Zealand (paid.by the Imperial Government) and rations, or Is. 9a. a day in lieu thereof. The sum of £37 10s. would be allowed towards outfit and camp kit, and a gratuity of £60 would be allowed on the termination of the contract if .the services rendered had been satisfactory. A free first-class passage each way would be given.
