PIRATE SUBMARINE SUNK

« | ■ OFFICERS AND CREW TAKEN i ■ PRISONER i _____________ > : RUSSIAN SUBMARINE'S : EXPLOIT i : ATTACK ON GERMAN BATTLESHIPS UNITED STATES AND I GERMANY : NAVAL AND MILITARY PREPARATIONS ATLANTIC FLEET'S CRUISE CANCELLED The German assault on Tpres, hinted at in a message from Amsterdam yesterday, has begun with a furious artillery attack. At Neuville St. Vaast and in the "Labyrinth" the French are maintaining their splendid advance. The Allies have also scored a success iu the Bois le Pretre. From the Austro-Italian theatre comcs the important news that the Italians have occupied Monfalcone and Monte Nero. Mr. Martin Donohoe throws some light on a recent cable message, which was piobably read with some incredulity, namely, on the use of wild buffaloes for stampeding through aand breaking down the Austrian entanglements in the Trentino passes. As an advance guard for traversing mine-loaded passes, tho buffaloes have done useful work by exploding the mines—bad for the buffaloes, but, per contra, unsatisfactory for the Austriims. Dead buffalo is also good meat for the Italian soldiers. From the Eastern theatre the news is scanty, and there is very little that is new from the Dardanelles, Bavo the reported statement that the Turks are abandoning their Egyptian and Persian campaigns in order to concentrate on the defence of their capital. The Russian Black Sea Fleet, at the eastern gate, has demolished the last of the Turkish coal bases. The British have sunk a submarine pirate, but there aro no details. A Russian submarine in the Baltic has attacked a squadron of German battleships, and the evidence of explosions suggests unplea-sant consequences—for the Huns.
