LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

o BAY OF ISLANDS ELECTION. 'Sir, —There are politicians who rush in where angels fear to tread. I was reminded of the above, or words to that effect, when reading an account of certain M.P.'s in and about the Bay of Islands. To me, it is pathetic that the mantle of Liberalism seems to have fallen on the shoulders of George Witty, George Forbes, J. T. Horasby, et hoc ownes genus—"Angela and Ministers of Grace, defend us" (Shakespeare). Faucy, after stalwarts like Ballance, Seddon, and John M'Kenzie— the pioneers of Liberalism—for their places in the forefront of the battle to be taken by Messrs. Witty, Forbes, Hornsby, and Co., why, it is enough to make honest John Ballance and his former colleagues, who, like himself have passed away, turn in their graves. I am really sorry for Sir Joseph Ward when I think he is surrounded by so many mediocrities, and now we hear of Mr. G. W. Russell trying to rouse up Taumarunui. G. W. Kussell in has time has played many parts—printer, parson, politician, and last, but not least, big runholder, and has the privilege, so it is rumoured, of being the largest landowner in the Dominion. That's his luck, though. I hope Taumarunui will follow the example of the electors of the Bay of Islands, and show the so-called Liberals that though in their own little sphere they may be somebody, as leaders of opinion in the Dominion they are not so esteemed.—l am, etc., I AM AJIAZED. Raweae, June 6, 1915.
