"COOL-BLOODED ENGLISH"
" GERMAN OFFICER'S EXPRESf SIONS. k A remarkable confession of English ' superiority has been made by a German officer -in a letter written to a friend in Switzerland. The confession is the more striking because the Germany mili- . tary caste have always—till this war, t in fact—underrated and looked down upon the British Army as a fighting 1 force. Writing from West Flanders on 5 March 17, the officer says:—"Since i writing you last, about a month ago, t I and my men have had the mcst misi erable time since the war began. We t are still up against the English, but i liad to fall back from tho village of ) , which we had partly taken, for s fear of being caught in a trap. These 1 English have a nasty way of making ; us believe that we have got tho bettor t of them, and just as we are_ about to > begin fortifying bur new positions, down j they come upon us apparently from - nowhere. -No H'ftiSjr our men are be--3 ginning to get a bit disheartened, and require constant changing, though we trv to keep the '.Id stagers at it as long as" possible, for they are far more valuf <*ble to us than the green stuff which they send up from the reoruitm!; bar- | racks. Fighting these English _is like l attacking ail army of non-commissioned , officers, "so well are their men trained 3 Jn comparison with ours, who, of course, ? have not had years of practice like the English regular army. Our men axe j brave enough when under proper leaderJ ship! but when it comes to tactics and i quiok movements, they are more diffiI euit to handle, and no match for theso . cool-blooded English, where each man 5 knows by instinct born of long train- ' ing, how to make the best use of his j position."
