Mr. P. A. Elworthy, of Gordon's Valley, Tiiuaru, a well-known Canterbury sportsman, and a son-in-law of Bishop Julius, has cabled that he has received a commission in tho Leicestershire Regi--mcnt, and has gone into camp at V\jmouth. He cxpectcs to go to the front in-about a month.
Feeling that it is not desirable, in' the interest of Imperial unity, to continue at the present time the agita* tion for Bible-in-Schools, Canon Garland has, at the request of the Arclw bishop of Brisbane, accepted tho position of resident Chaplain- in. the training camp for the Queensland Expeditionary Force. The Brisbane "Courier,"" in commenting on the fact, says: "The appointment of Canon Garland will prove a popular one; there is, perhaps,, no one capable of exerting quite the same influence with our boys." Canon, Garland, who ranks as LieutenantColonel, is Senior Chaplain for Queensland. During the South African Wax he was under canvas witli the West Australian troops for twenty months. The Sydney "Church Standard," in chronicling the appointment, says: "He has the gift of speaking on tha great truths of religion and morality in a way that a soldier understands and likes, and his 6ormons at parado services are always listened to with attention and appreciation." ! Canon Garland took up his official position on Trinity Sunday, May 30.
The following three Auckland men have been selected to join the veterinary section of the Seinforcements now at Trentham, and will leave Auckland with the seventh draft on June 15: — Messrs. Christopher Norgrove, EUerslie; Thomas Donnell M'Connell, and Frederick Walter Popham, franklin Road.
Mr. Thomas Joseph Ryan, the new . Premier of Queensland, was born at Port Fairy, Victoria, in 1876. He was educated at the Jesuit College, Kew, and South Melbourne College, at each of which ho held a scholarship. He graduated Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University, with honours in classics. After leaving college he was appointed assistant classical master at the Melbourne High School, and subsequently became resident classical master of the Church of England Grammar School, Launceston. Later he went to the Maryborough Grammar School (Queensland) as classical master. While in Melbourne, Mr. Ryan studied law, graduating as Bachelor of Laws in. 1901. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar, and entered politics for Barcoo in 1909, when ho defeated Mr. George Kerr, formerly Minister of Kailways. At the election held on May 22 Mr. Ryan scored an easy win, polling 1425 votes, against 561 cast for his Liberal opponent.
Sapper Charles Nixon, who is leaving for the front with A"ifth Remforecemtns, was entertained _at a gathering at the Wellington Working Men's Club last evening. Sapper Nixon, who is a member of one of Wellington s pioneer families, and has of late years been associated with affairs concerning the progress of Brooklyn suburb, was presented with a smoker's companion, a token which the many speakers assured bim carried with ft • the best wishes of his friends for a successful campaigning on active service and a safe return.
