HOTELS IN THE CITY
♦ : THEIR CONTROL SATISFACTORY MANY TRANSFERS GRANTED Tho annual meeting of the Wellington Licensing Committee was held yesterday in tho Magistrate's Court. Mr. W. G. Biddell, S.M., presided, and there were also on the Bench Messrs. E. Fletcher, \\. J ■ Hclvor, b. J. Petherick, J. Smith, and (J. liller. Superintendent Ellison represented tho police. Tho chairman said that the report ot the police with regard to tho conduct aim etatp of the premises of tho different hotels of the "Wellington district was on tlw whole, satisfactory. Most of the hotels hau been woil conducted daring the past year; one or two had not been quite so well conducted, but there was no doubt that if the licensees of thoso hotels had exorcised the powers they had under the Licensing Act in the conduct of their hotels, tho committee could 6eo nothing to have prevented them from conducting their hotels in tho same way as the main body of licensees had in the City of Wellington. The state of repairs was in most cases satisfactory. 'I here was one hotel where tho police objected to tho state of repairs, and the District Health Office bad also lodged with the conimjttee a notice stating that in two cases, ono of which waa incorporated in tho police report, that tho buildiugs had not been kept in tho proper state of repair under tho Licensing Act. So far as the Health Department was concerned, licensees had to be notified of objections in time to enable them to meet the objections. If the Department co-operated with the police, and the police adopted the Department's report, the > committee would give the necessary notice, and would consider the objections, but where the Department acted independently the committee was of opinion that, as tho Department had speciflo power in connection with all tho buildings in Wellington, irrespective of hotels, it was for them to see that those repairs they considered necessary should be earned out under the powers conferred upon them by the Public Health Act, and not shelve their responsibility by mere notice to toe Licensing Committee. In one case the police had not incorporated the objections of the Health Department, and the committee was unable to 6ee its way to deal with those objections, although they might be of some importance to the owner. If the Health Department wished formally to object to any of the licenses they could lodge objections in the ordinary way, and appear to sustain those objections, and the licensee could meet them. \ TBANSFEBS. Transfers were agreed to in the following cases:—Adelpbi, J. T. Levett to F. M. Paulsen; Albion, P. Costin to J. J. Firth; Caledonian, E. 11. Davey to A. M. Dempster; Hotel Cecil, J. Sullivan; Post Office,, M' M'Vinish to ,W. M. lluir; Shamrock, P. Bogers to H. B. Ecid; Te Aro, W. M. Xicl'J to P. liogera. When the application came up for a renowal of the license of the Empire Hotel to F. Pool, Superintendent Ellison 6tated that he had notified tho licensee that the servants' bedrooms, about eight, and the servants' dining-room, required to bo renovated right through. Tho lease of the present licensee expired in September, and she did not want to go to tin- expense of renovating. The rooms had been cleaned up. i\o doubt tho renovating would be carried out if the committee said that it was necessary. The application was adjourned till June 28 to work to be done. Mr. E. IC. lvirkcaldie appeared in support of the application for a renewal of the license of the Clyde Quay Hotel to C. A. Schauer. There were police and Public Health Department objections, owing to the state of repairs to the building, and Mr. Kirkcaidie said that a contract had now been let for upwards of JE7O for the carrying out of the repairs required. Probably at the end of the present lease, whioh had about two years to run, the owner might see his way to rebuild. Ihe application was adjourned till June 28, to enable the required repairs to be carried out. In Tegard to the application for a ronewal of the license of the Cricketers' Arms Hotel to F. T. Foley, Superintendent Ellison said that the only objection was that the terms of Section 76 of the Licensing Act, requiring an efficient private entrance, were not carried out. Mr. J. J. M'Grath, for the licensee, explained that the licensee was not aware that the scction applied to .a slide-door in a private bar. It had been made clear that tho slide must be closed up. Superintendent Ellison agreed that if the Tory Street entranco was made a bona-flde private entrance he would bo satisfied. The application was adjourned till Juno 28 to allow this to be done.
