MACHINE GUN RATS
IMPRESSIONS OP ENEMY'S ' CELLAR FIGHTERS (Rec. Juno 8, 0.40 a.m.) • Dunkirk, June 7. While the British are building up reserves of liigli explosive ammunition before they attempt another advance, the Germans are pouring an unending stream of metal aliout our lines. The German sappers. are tireless, boring day and night, despite the evidence that their infantry is not strong enough! to launoh an attack in force. It is impossible to exaggerate the importance and strength of the machine guns. Tlio .skinners lurk iii cellars until the advances have swept past, then they open'fire. They work" the guns to the last. This is like the courage of a cornered rat, and is curious when contrasted with the fact- that they display 110 such quality in an open fight. The are often) bolted and barred within cellars, where the only alternative is to sell their lives a 6 dearly as possible. This has been particularly so in the fighting round Arras.
