STIiENUOUS PILOTAGE. • Following upon the laying of submarine mines around the coasts of the Uritish imes, the British Admiralty, ordered tho hirict enforcement of enmpulsory pilotage for all incoming and departing mereha.nt mi'nt. thu pilots being the only men outride of tho Navy entrusted with the plana of tho protecting minefields. The result lias been to place n- very heavy stTain upon the British pilots, many of whom ht.vo gone to their lant account, through lining b'own up by the enemy's submarines. vlul.it practically every living pilot on active service runs continuous risk of losing his life whilst carrying out his duties. When the Shaw-Savill liner .Momari left Lendon this trip for New Zealand she wna piloted beyond the danger zone by <i Channel pilot who had been on duty for 36 hour,s consecutively, and he ecemed to regard his lot as an ordinary exigency to which ally pilot might have to reckon with.
