The Governor has received a cable* niessage as follows from Earl Kitchener in reply to the congratulations which' His Excellency forwarded him on behalf of the Government and the people, of New Zealand in connection with 'the Birthday honours:—"l hasten to assure you of my deep appreciation of your kind message, for which. I am most grateful.—(Signed) Kitchener." Sergeant Brooke-Taylor, son of Mr.. W. Brooke-Taylor, of Roseneath (and secretary of the Wellington Opera House Company), returned in charge of the New Zealand invalids, who arrived by the Wimmera on Friday. Mr. Taylor got as far as the Island of Lemnos, which was used as a base. From there lie had to come back, owing to an old Injury to ono of his knees causing him troublo. This accident' occurred a couple of years ago at the top of ttio Paekakariki Hill, where he received a severe kick on the knee from a horse, and had' to be brought to town by, motor. 1 Mr. L. Bastings, 8.A., of Victoria University College, has been appointed to tho staff of the Wanganui Technical College as science master. Mr. Bastings left Wellington, for the north by last night's express. Major J. T. Bosworth, District Adjutant at Military "Headquarters, Palmer6ton North, aud Mrs. Bosworth, are at present in- "Wellington and arc staying at the Hotel Windsor. . Mr. H. W. Grimes returned to Wellington yesterday from Christekurch. Lieut. Ronald Gray, who was reported on Thursday as having beeu wounded in France, sustained an injury above the knee, and is progressing favourably, according to private advice received. Lieut. Gray is the youngest son of the late Mr. W. Gray, Secretary of the General Post Office, and is an old Wellington College boy. At the outbreak of war Lieut. Gray joined King Edward's Horse, England, and recently received a commission in the Royal Artillery. The death is recorded at No. 9 Corn- . wall Street, Island Bay, of Mr. Hugh Blackwell M'Guire, after a brief illness. Mr. M'Guire, who was a building contractor, was born in. Ayrshire, Scotland, and after visiting America, came out to New Zealand in tho ship Avalanche about 40 years ago. At various timos ho co-operated with the lat© Mr. Trevor and they together brought to successful completion quito a number of fnio buildings throughout the Dominion. Tho deceased, a man of sterling Qualities, was kind and charitably disposed to all who came in contact with him. He at various times held positions oil road boards and school committees m the South Island, and was also an affiliated member of tho Freemasons Lodge 'ftitnnekai. His wife (who also came out to New Zealand in the snip. Avalanche with her parents, and is tho eldest daughter of tho lato Mr. Thomas Antrohus) survives him, together with her four sons and three daughters. The former are Messrs. Hugh, Harry, William and Alec. M'Guire, and the latter Mrs. A. Goodwin, South Wellington; Mrs. W. Konningtoi), Marlborough; and Miss Clara M'Guire, Wellington. Tho funeral of tho deceased will leave his lato residence, Island Bay, at 10 a.m. to-morrow.
