Stev- ] ■ ens removes one of the most distin- ■ -guished members of the New Zealand \ ■ Upper Houso. In his .later life advanc- ■ ing years made it impossible for him ■ to take a, very active part in the busi- ! > ness of Parliament, but time was when 1 he was one of the most active of the > great men who guided the destinies of i this country. Edward Cephas John ■ Stevens was the son of a clergyman > the rector of Salford, Oxfordshire. He ■ was horn in 1837 and educated at Marl- : borough College, and the Royal Agri- ■ cultural College, Cirencester. ' He ar--1 rived in New_ Zealand, a young man I just out of his 'teens, and settled in Canterbury. He was a member of the I Canterbury Provincial Executive in ■ 1863-66, and in 1866 was elected mem- i • ber of the house of Representatives for i > the' constituency of Selwyn. He was 1 : elected again in 1876 to represent s Christcliurch, and again in 187,9. In < 1882 lie was appointed to the i lative Council, a life member. He was a a membor of the Atkinson Ministrv f from ISB7 to 1891. (
