Strong Turkish positions were assaulted with great gallantry, and though the enemy's line was not at all points permanently driven back, important gains were achieved by the Allies. Their most pronounced success was won on the southern line, where they advanced 1 five hundred yards on a front of throe miles. In Galicia the Russians are resisting the Austro-German onset with splendid determination. On the River San they are pressing a successful offensive, but further south they are stemming heavy attacks on their lino along the River Dniester. British and French troops in Northern France "have made further inroads into the German fortified front covering the approaches to Lille, and the enemy has lost some ground also in Flanders. News of the Italian campaigns relates chiefly to artillery duels between Italian batteries and the Austrian forts along the frontiers. Rome official reports state that the Austrian lines along the *Isonzo River, defending the approach to Istria, are of great strength. Further Zeppelin 'aids have been made on the east and south-east coasts of England, but' the resultant casualties are few and the damage done comparatively slight.
