THE TURF

a OTAKI WINTER MEETING SECOND DAY, WILD LUPIN WINS THE BIG RACE Local sportsmen who attended tho seo ond day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club't Mooting wore agreeably surprised to find that the rain. Mid mist, which were hanging over the City yesterday morning, did not extend to tho Mauawatu district. The weather round about Otaki ffaa beautifully, fine—bright suushiiie with not a breath of wind, and though tho attendance at tho course was not as largo as on Thursday it was satisfactory for an off-day. The totalisalor investments were not quite as large as on the second day of the last Winter Meeting, and as there was a decrease on tho first (lay also, tho total figures for tho meeting were 6ome ;£2828 less than last years's total of .£'35,577.. Tho going on the racing track was on the heavy side, and against very fast times. Big fields contested ' tie majority of tho events and interesting racing was witnessed. There wore no soratchings in tho Telegraph Hack Handicap, arid a big field of soventeen runnors went to the post. There were several fresh horses engaged and one of them, tho Waverley-traincd 'l'iora, was heavily backed. After a very chequered passage she got through in the and beat Irish Fusilier, who is affected jn the wind. Hushabye was close up third, and then came Arrahna, Multoe, and Vladineau. Deviation and Hushabye were prominent to the turn, where the former tired. Several of the well-fancied candidates drew outride numbers and had their ohancos spoilt by being carried out wide at the bend. It was a weak field which contested the Hack Steeples, and tho Poriruatrained Naupata, a winner over hurdles at Bulls, was made a better favourite than Bonny. The latter made play for a mile, when the Mahaki gelding took charge and won nicely. Paremata fell early, but was remounted and got third place. Silver Dale was tho only other Muse to finish. Katua ran off at the Hencoop, as did Pikiho, and A tiki fell at the first fence, and Colonel Webb at the brush going out of the course. Several of the runners carried overweights in the Hnia Handicap, in whiojl, after the scratching of Maniaroa and Diovolo, the brown norso Goldstream was made a |ocd maohine favourite, but a bad run spoilt any chance he had. In the early part of the race Immer and Peroneal were in front, followed by George and Bene, with Achilledes and Wild Lupin handy. Achilledes looked dangerous at the turn into the straight, but he failed to Tun on, and Wild Lupin took charge from Lady Louisa. The Hawera horse won nicoiv from tho consistent Lady Louisa, witji Rone well up, and then came the Porirua pair, George and GoldstiMm, with Ineuru alongside them. Whisperer and Royal Marv were withdrawn from the Stewards' Hack Handicap, and Boldstroke was left ajt tho post. With W. Young substituted for H. loung the public sent Tangihou out a yeiry warm order. The St. Ambrose gelding covered a lot of ground on the bend, but he' was in charge at tho straight entrance, and won nicely from Master Aohilles and Submersion. Merry Gain might hare troubled the winner had she not got a bad check at the turn through Ally, who had been oat in fronit coming hack quickly. Fortify proved himself to be a pretty smart hack bv conceding the field a chain start in the Railway Handicap, and than winning by that distance. Powder Fox led Veronal and Alltcar to the turn, but the Hawera hack then took charge, and won. on the bit. Veronal was beaten by the weight, but Powder Fox shaped well, as did Altcar. Achilleus. (Aohilles—Dexterity), carrying the minimnm impost, scored in the O'hau Welter Handicap, after a great finish with Rautangata, His Eminence, and Doon. The last-named looked all m-er a winner coming round the turn, but she failed to finish on. was always well placed. His Eminence, after being shujt in down the back, can»e round the field, and struggling on well under his big weight, was jnst beaten, The winner is a maiden performer, but as ho gfts a distanoe well ho may- go on imi proving. He was ridden by Deeley. This made the crack horseman's ninetieth win for the season, and this constitutes a fresa New Zealand record. Iceberg was made a good favourite in the Final Hack Scurry, and after being Well plated from ithe early stages, ho won comfortably. Just prior, to the start Tho Ferry unseated her rider and 6he took no part in the race RESULTS, TELEGRAPH HACK HANDICAP, of sovb. Five furlongs, o Hrereton's ch. m.
